About 3 years ago, Jamaican born star MR. VEGAS began working together, in two studios while I was somewhat living in Jamaica, then online (where he'd send songs that needed background vocals, or beats that needed melody and lyrics), and in Barbados, where we'd have songwriting sessions. Though he became my friend, it was still impossible to lose sight of the fact that I'd been granted the opportunity to work with yet another top artiste; this time from another country and in a different capacity. The trust that he had in me meant a lot, coupled with the creative freedom and 'forward' he always extended, simply because he believed in my ability as a songwriter.
I'll always remember when we were leaving a store in Barbados, and someone came up to me and asked, "Oh, you'se de backup singer from tv?" I smiled and nodded. He didn't. He replied, "She's not a backup singer. She's a singer who does background vocaaaalssss!" I nearly had a heart attack right then and there, and it was one of the most crucial reminders of my potential that I needed then more than ever. HUGE thanks to EDDY GRANT, CHRIS ALLMAN, VIKING TUNDAH, TERRY ARTHUR, and MINIM who always tried to 'knock that into my head' when I just couldn't give myself permission to be 'big.' (kinda tough for someone who's only 5ft and used to be called "Tweety.")
Look out for an upcoming video blog series, where I'll be sharing about my musical journey with some of the most amazingly talented and wonderful people I know, and please take a listen to the song I wrote (and did "background vocaaallsss" on) with MR. VEGAS - his NEW RELEASE, entitled "SWEET JAMAICA" - the new 'anthem.'
